Honda Odyssey J Expert Review

The Honda Odyssey J is the more affordable variant of the manufacturer’s flagship MUV worldwide, which is known for its refined experience of mobility from point A to point B. Available with a single powertrain and in two different variants – EX and EX-V, the Honda Odyssey J is being offered with a total of six paint schemes – Platinum White, Silver Platinum, Crystal Black, Cobalt Blue, Twinkle Black, and Carnelian Red.

Interior

While Honda has managed to keep things simple and minimalist within the cabin of the Honda Odyssey J, in the process, it has made the cabin look quite cool and futuristic for a MUV.

The four-spoke multi-functional steering wheel along with a combination of analog and digital meters in the instrument console makes the driver’s cockpit feel big and premium. The centre console is divided into two parts, while the upper layer is a part of the upper dashboard with a touchscreen infotainment system taking the centre stage, the lower portion is kept in the lower part of the dashboard, which finished in faux wood and comes with controls for climate control and gear lever positioned besides it.

The Honda Odyssey J comes with a six-seater layout with captain seats in all the three rows, thus keeping the inner occupants’ comfort in top priority. The Honda Odyssey J is also equipped with some very premium features like tri-zone automatic climate control, electric sunroof, leather upholstery, powered driver’s seat, push-button start with keyless entry and cruise control.

Exterior

For a MUV, the Honda Odyssey J looks quite exuberant with not going too overboard in terms of the way it looks. With large dimensions and cool styling bits, the Honda Odyssey J looks distinctive and premium enough.

The frontal look of the Honda Odyssey J is wide and big, with a large chrome grille present there in two parts – a thick and wide chrome bar with dark chrome slats placed below it, laid out in the form of a cascading waterfall. The angular headlamps with double LED projectors and daytime running LEDs placed below them play a good role in making the front look premium too.

The Honda Odyssey J looks quite long and premium from the side, thanks to a short bonnet complemented with large side windows and long wheelbase. The Z-shaped character line flowing from bottom to the edge of the tail lamp looks unique, while the chrome finished door handles, shoulder line and machined alloy wheels add premium appeal even more.

At the rear, there is a certain bulkiness to the Honda Odyssey J, with ultra-wide and long LED tail lamps covering a major chunk of space of the boot lid. The U-shaped chrome bar joining the tail lamps from the bottom complete the look at the rear.

Ride & Handling

For an MUV, the Honda Odyssey J has a soft suspension and steering setup, which is very helpful in making the ride and handling balance quite supple for rear seat occupants and easy to drive for the driver. However, this very soft setup makes it not so involving to drive, as the steering simply lacks the feel and feedback.

Engine & Fuel Consumption

The Honda Odyssey J has a 2.4-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine under its hood. This engine is paired to a simple CVT gearbox, and produces a maximum power output of 175 PS and a peak torque output of 225 Nm.

Braking & Safety

The Honda Odyssey J is decently equipped with major safety equipment like the front, side and curtain airbags, Honda Sensing, ABS with EBD and Brake Assist, Blind Spot Information, traction control, hill start assist, tire pressure monitoring system, vehicle stability assist and agile handling assist.

Verdict

The Honda Odyssey J has got the premium appeal in its design and the way it makes its inner occupants feel comfortable, which people usually don’t expect from a traditional MUV. While its soft suspension setup comes naturally to it, the luxury appeal of the Odyssey J is a surprise element, which surely makes it very impressive for its price.
